Famous Painters of Symbolism (1885-1910)

Gustav Klimt was born in Baum garden, near Vienna in Austria-Hungary.  Klimt lived in poverty for most of his childhood, as work was scarce and economic advancement was difficult for immigrants.

Klimt became one of the founding members and president of the Wiener Secession 1897 and of the group’s periodical (“Sacred Spring”

The group’s symbol was Pallas Athena the Greek goddess of just causes, wisdom, and the arts
